This story is so tragic. Right up there with the green mile and the boy in the striped pajamas. The kid lived alone in a shed because his parents hated him. Survived on biscuits and mustard, and his only friend was a lawnmower that he got to take apart and reassemble day in and day out. That part is sad on its own 😢

One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Every single actor absolutely nailed their parts and made it such a joy to watch.

BBT is one of the greatest. hope he does another sling blade-type film. small, independent, character driven. i'd be first in line.

i'm glad i found this. i saw the feature film with j.t. walsh but never saw this before. "you can imagine how badly i wanted my twenty-five dollars back." 😆 i read walsh was the opposite of his characters. he was a peace loving and politically active person in pursuit of protests and human rights. he parodied the authority figures he played in his acting roles since they opposed his personal views.

Why did Karl ask the bigger girl to leave the room? Is it because he thinks shes the pretty one? Im talking about in the film not the short. Shes not big in the short or doesnt look as big.

Wow I never realised there was a prior ahort film. There's something about Sling Blade that hits the nail on the head about so many aspects of mental health institutions., abuse and neglect also accept of difference. I am not from the USA so miss a few of the references. Such a sad tale but so kindly told. Don't understand wjy it is jot on any streaming servic. Does anyone know? Thanks.

If you watched a movie in the 90s with a bad guy, chances are he was played by J.T. Walsh. Hell of an actor who was taken too soon.

Ol Billy Bob is one of those men who became handsome the older he got. Granted he was filming here but y’all just look him up through the years and see. I’m the other type man who went from handsome to old looking over night at 35 😂. Bless my wife’s heart.

It’s incredible to see how much this differs in quality versus the film. The acting here is for the most part wooden and terrible. The actors feel like they are rushing through their lines and haven’t found the characters yet. I’m glad the decision was made to recast the hospital director. There is none of the humanity and kindness that James Hampton brought to the role. The two girl reporters still come off as obnoxious and flippant, but in the film it didn’t come off nearly as so. Except for Childers character the acting here overall is vastly inferior to the film. Even JT Walsh’s portrayal as the wacko rapist seems half hearted. In the film he knocked it out of the park, his delivery was completely different, much more subtle,he was creepy and unbalanced. His performance was unsettling and nuanced. He made your skin crawl and you wished Karl would have walked away. You could see him wince at the things he was hearing. I realize this was just a short film to show what his idea was. I’m just glad the film wasn’t like this and they made the decisions to recast certain characters and delete unnecessary scenes that did nothing to add to the story.

This director takes himself much too seriously, and I would imagine that he sees himself as not only the smartest person in the room he’s in, but any room anywhere. Never heard of him other than through his work in which Billy Bob was the actual creative, but I’m very familiar with Billy Bob Thornton.

This director sounds like one of those Hollywood, “holier-than-thou” figures who takes himself much too seriously. I think the short got so much positive feedback is on the strength of Billy Bob’s acting, writing, and general creativity.

Great film. We call it a slash hook. It is a popular implement to bring to weddings & funerals and other formal family events where each family may have differences and wish to express them without resorting to name calling or other unpleasant means.
